it was a good spring

they say that absence makes the heart grow fonder.
that older age casts a rosy light on previous days.
that yesterday seems sweeter the more we get into tomorrow.
once we learn bigger lessons, maybe,
we forget the pain of learning the smaller ones,
ones we didn’t realize were small at the time.
i got back more film,
freshly developed from the days of budding bushes.
it was a good spring.
is it too late to say that...now that autumn is here?
now that the bushes' leaves drift into red, one by one?
absence makes the heart grow fonder maybe,
or perhaps less cold.
when the old letters are thrown away and the pretty pictures kept,
the lack of words and abundance of color and light warps memories
(or maybe sheds light on what really matters.)

adventures in film photography / year one

almost exactly a year ago
i stumbled upon a seemingly small blessing
(yet a blessing just the same).
a rummage sale,
a vintage, mismatched, heavy old camera,
three dollars.

i've always been a fan of analog.
the grain,
the texture,
the focus and leaks.
though seeming more elite,
a bit unattainable at the time.
but i found it randomly,
(or rather
it found me.)

countless online articles, little discoveries
and a free light meter app later,
a first roll of film
twenty four manual exposures
excitement, apprehension, confusion.
by that first set of prints, i was hooked.

now there are three wonderful cameras;
each with different meanings,
different strengths and weekends.
ten envelops full of prints in a drawer.
a roll in a purse, waiting to be dropped off
an online album with almsot 200 images

here's to a year of capturing memories on film.
it's been delightful, its been a blessing,
and i can't wait to see where it takes me next.

we don't have to worry

my life becomes more sporadic
the things once pictured so important
aren't ever so much at all.
awaking every morning
as a different person
a different person every day.
(don't get lost in what is thought of you
be found in God and know what is truth)
it's alright
to be up all night
to smile at strangers
to ponder the reasons we do things.
to realize that i'm wrong
i'm so wrong
all the time.
and that's okay really.

because maybe
just maybe
when the world ends

it's

really

just

beginning.

don't look back, those days are gone

(excerpt from june 2015)
there comes a time, the scars do heal. and though that’s known when in the dark, it’s hard to see the light. now the light is washing over me slowly. filling in the cracks and refreshing the mind and senses, drying the scabs to be wholesome, clean scars. scars that will fade. are fading.  the sun bleaches them and browns the skin around, and my heart is rounded and fills me nicely instead of hiding and writhing. and when i tip my face to the sky, i see it and i want to share it. but i also want to keep it for me.
and i smile.

this i hold dear

funny how you can get a roll of film back with images you forgot you captured,
realizing how different things were just a few months ago.
how in such a time, you're a different person.

most of these images i made at the farm.
i've taken to documenting the way things are and will never be again,
the things, places and moments i hold dear.
everything changes so fast.
but the one thing that never seem to change is the farm.
it's always windy and sunny.
empty and vast.  full and hidden.
it doesn't matter where i live or travel, how old i am;
when we get a weekend free, i'm on the farm.
working, relaxing, visiting with the grandparents, exploring, wandering.
the only thing that changes is me,
for i'm a different person each time i visit.
the farm and surrounding community seems to be timeless,
the same way i  remember it from when i was 12
(or any age).
a constant.
a happy place.
