summer.
is it just a season?
is it an idea?
a color?
a feeling?
(all of the above?)
whatever it is, summer is now.
it is here and i'm living in it.
it is full of bright colors, heat, long days and quiet afternoons;
with Daisy and my banjo as constant companions.

it is pulsing with excitement and promise,
freedom and laughter.
it is the little things;
like watching a movie into the night (because i can),
going barefoot, getting a sunburn,
riding my bike slowly, going nowhere,
sitting on the back porch, reading until the last bit of sunlight fades from the sky.

Hello, dear Abigail, my award winning friend! Hi, Daisy! I am thrilled to know that you are enjoying summer in much the same way I did in the 1950s and 60s. In those days we had a sense of freedom few of today's young people enjoy because they have gotten into the habit of spending most of their waking hours playing video games and staying connected with 100 friends by means of electronic devices and social media. You are very fortunate to have discovered the pure joy of breaking free of those electronic shackles, experiencing the great outdoors, running barefoot through a lawn sprinkler, riding your bicycle in any direction it might lead you, playing with your faithful pup, savoring quiet moments reading a REAL book and taking pictures of sunsets and other natural and man made wonders that surround you. You are setting a positive example for others your age to follow, Abigail. You are leading the movement to unplug, disconnect and live life authentically.
Summer is a bass raising Cain on the other end if your line, sitting on the porch in the evenings playing guitar and singing to the skeeters, cruising listening to Alabama with the windows down, complaining about the dirt being too dry and then dying from the humidity when it rains. Summer's also a good time to daydream.
I have to say all of the above, simply because it has so many different aspects and good things about it. Of course, your pictures only make it seem so much more memorable and familiar. What makes photography of everyday things, in my eyes, more meaningful than professional photography with sets and models and everything else is that the latter doesn't have the spontaneity nor does it have the emotion of, "I wanted to take this picture because it meant something to me." As strange as it may sound, my favorites are the first one of the curb (simply because it's so suburban and summery) and the last one of the clouds. Have a wonderful week!
Love those curtains and the last pictures especially. Glad summer is here for the longer days but the humidity is ugh!

I've been meaning to send you a note & reply to your email for quite some time -- I don't know what happens to the clock but months seem to go by really really fast. Now that I'd like to sit down and write out a reply, I can't find your email. *Insert sloppy tears here* Could you send me a quick little note through email so I can find it? I loved what you wrote and it came to me during a time when I felt very lonely. It's not often I have somebody (especially a girl) to share the love of banjo and guitar with.
If only we lived closer to one another, I can imagine us sitting in a daisy field with our instruments, long dresses, and lots of delicious snacks while the sun kisses our cheeks. Wouldn't that be wonderful? Maybe one day...
