mod christmas

bargain sweater dresses
made in modern days
but holding a vintage charm
and a festive air.
a slow, quiet and cold day ,
with more than just snow clouds on the horizon:
rest from busy days,
a chance to slow down
a chance to look around.
a pile of books,
a neglected fabric stash.

i've unpacked the banjo,
dusted the lonely keyboard
and am diving into a treasure trove of music
with new shoes for new adventures
( merry christmas, hope yours was rad )

the picnic dress

the only dress i've made this summer, the only dress i've needed this summer.
ice cream socials, outdoor concerts, music festivals, sunday morning services,
sweaty hours in the hot sun or cold buildings, countless washings and ironings.
packed in suitcases and garment bags, worn with sandals and boots,
changed into in dressing rooms and dimly lit bathroom stalls,
hours and hours next to daisy and the banjo and my skin.
a summer dress,
adventure dress,
nice outfit,
performance duds,
in picnic red gingham.
the color of summer 2015.

the beauty of making things for yourself

i crocheted a cardigan
from 1970s pattern
i call it:
the cornmeal cardigan.
because that's the color of the yarn.
good name for a color
no?
i actually finished last month.
still searching for the perfect buttons
but i wear them open anyway
so no hurry.

i obviously made it a tad different
i can't leave anything alone.
but beauty of making things yourself
is having it fit you perfectly
and the exact style you want.
and the process is fun.

i've included the pattern
just in case
you want to make it too.
we can be twins
if you want.

good for my soul

i made a dress out of a sheet.
a pretty vintage sheet from an estate sale.

it is the colors of autumn.
it is the colors of the waxy
yellow leaves i that flutter through the air
i retrieve from the soft grass
hold in my hand
press in my heavy books.

this yellow and gold...
they are some of my favorites.
they are good for my soul.
that and this sapphire blue
spotless and clean
sky above me.

on the road (again)

beginning last week
and on through this month and into next
every weekend we'll be on the road.
this is much how july and august was
but september had a few free weekends.

i've heard folks say how entertainment
and being on the road is a hard life.
but really, anything is hard
if you let it be.
i look at it as adventuring to new and exciting places.
it is tiring.
but it's a good kind of tired.
a tired because you've had fun.
and i get back home to the dog and the schoolwork
fighting off sleep and laboring through the lessons.
but as the week progresses on
the excitement grows.
soon its the weekend and off i go.
into the flurry of anticipation
quiet miles in the van
(sometimes before dawn)
sound checks and instruments into their cases
out, and then in again (and again)
lugging them up and down and around
more quiet miles.

tomorrow
another awesome weekend starts.
daisy gets to come along.
i'll be armed with my puppy dog
a new vintage camera
and a bag the color of ripe pumpkins.

september things (life lately + outfit)

sister made applesauce bread
which smells and tastes like autumn
(if autumn were edible.)

where i sit and do my studies is beside a big window.
every morning as i work,
sunlight streams in onto the table and my books.
Daisy sits in her little bed and keeps watch.

lots of cheap finds lately.
old books, maps and film cameras.
they all fuel my imagination, wandering spirit and creative vision.

I recently started running again.
I've always walked a lot
but wanted to go faster.
so i started jogging a bit.
its liberating to go fast.

i'm back into sewing after a crazy busy summer.
it relaxes me so i work before bedtime.
i'm really loving soft floral prints
and easy, carefree vintage dresses.
(dress shown is from Simplicity 0981 and 1880)

last week, an event i had to be at got cancelled.
i got my backpack, packed a sandwich, charged my camera
and took off the next morning.
we were away for the day, but back by evening.
homebody/restless adventurer.
that's how i roll, people.

i found some flowers and leaves in an book.
they were from our old house before we moved.
i remember them, my beloved trees and flowers.
it was like reconnecting with an old friend.
i glued and hung them on my wall
and then went out and picked new ones.

thank you for all the wonderful replies last time.
it has been interesting to see what inspires each of you,
and you have been inspiring me with the wonderful things you told me :)
