the beauty of making things for yourself

i crocheted a cardigan
from 1970s pattern
i call it:
the cornmeal cardigan.
because that's the color of the yarn.
good name for a color
no?
i actually finished last month.
still searching for the perfect buttons
but i wear them open anyway
so no hurry.

i obviously made it a tad different
i can't leave anything alone.
but beauty of making things yourself
is having it fit you perfectly
and the exact style you want.
and the process is fun.

i've included the pattern
just in case
you want to make it too.
we can be twins
if you want.

yarn: Red Heart in Cornmeal

No way, ahh, I love it! The color is so bright and soft at the same time, it's wonderful. How hard is it to crochet arms? I'm stuck on sewing together squares and rectangles right now because I've yet to figure out how to make arm holes.

The cardigan is gorgeous, what a job well done! I also really love the colour, I had a cardigan that I really loved similar in style and colour when I was younger and yours has made me think of it.

I absolutely LOVE your new cardigan--the color you chose for it is exquisite!!! And your little Maltese is adorable:) I too am a lover of Jesus, music, dogs, history and foggy days (oh, and as you know, mountains)!

I love it! I've fiddled around with crochet for years and my dream is to make a cardigan or sweater. Just have to figure out those pesky increases and decreases first! It's absolutely lovely.

Oh Abigail, this is absolutely gorgeous! You have such a talent for crochet and I love that you modified a vintage pattern. I think it looks great with or without the buttons, but I'm sure you will find some great ones :)

You did a beautiful job on the cardigan! It looks gorgeous!!! I crochet a little, but I've never made anything like that--stunning!

That looks fabulous on you! Wonderful color choice, too. :) I wish I could knit so badly! I'm dying for one of those 1940s short sleeve sweaters but they're impossible to find and the reproductions are so expensive. The only way is to learn how to knit. About how easy was that particular sweater?

thank you.
it's not very hard at all to do shaping. just a matter of increasing and decreasing. so like, making two stitches in the same hole or skipping one, or starting the row with single crochet and finishing the row a few stitches early. really, if you can read you can make one. whatever i don't understand i just google :)

thank you. it's actually easy, just a matter of putting two stitches in one hole for increase and skipping stitches for decreasing. i hope you try sometime!

thank you! i totally understand. the 1940s jumper is one of my goals.
it's actually pretty easy. the large stitch and thick yarn made it work up fairly quickly. reading/understanding kitting and patter terminology takes some getting used to, but this was a breeze because i've crocheted and read patterns like this for a few years. but anything i don't know i google. :)

Well I'll have to get myself the proper tools. I might start with something small, like a simple hat. :) Hopefully I'll someday be able to knit some of the glorious things that I've seen on Tickety Boo Tupney's blog. But that would take a lot of practice! :)

Oh that doesn't sound too bad! I'll have to try it someday. YouTube has such awesome tutorial videos, that's usually my go-to place for crochet and knitting questions!

Oh this is super swell! Make me one ;) hehe

Oh Abigail, it is sweet and lovely, classic and cheerful and you know, that makes me think how it is very much akin to you and yourself, too. For those same descriptions apply to both on every front.

Wonderful job on your cozy, beautiful new sweater, honey. I hope it keeps you warm for many a chilly season to come.

I want to make learning to crochet one of my goals for 2015. I want to make pretty sweaters for my sweet girl. I think the real question here though is, will you be making that matching sweater for your puppers?!

Wow, I've never seen a crocheted cardigan! Very cool! Most of my friends knit, except for my sister-in-law and my sister, and they've never made a cardigan or sweater before. You have the right skin tone to wear this beautiful color ; )

Oh, it's gorgeous, dear Abigail! Look at all the favorable comments from the vintagers and clothing makers in our circle! It's a beautiful color, looks great on you and it'll keep you warm this winter. Mrs. Shady spends hours each day crocheting and finds it equally satisfying and rewarding.

Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend, and thank you for letting me know about McPherson, KS!

That is such a lovely cardigan! And so cool that you made it yourself. I really want to knit myself a sweater, but I have a hard time sticking to one project.

Abigail said...

yes, it is both satisfying and rewarding. working with he hands and relaxing at the same time is wonderful. thank you.

Abigail said...

ah. that sounds like a great goal. working with the hands and relaxing at the same time, handcrafts are very rewarding. and no, i probably won't make a sweater for Daisy, as she is kind of particular about things like that (she's not a sweater kind of gal :))

Abigail said...

you underestimate yourself! this was very easy, just double crochet stitches... go for it :)
