out east

i've been over to eastern Kansas and Oklahoma a couple times in the last few weeks.
it's a weird (but cool) mix of open prairie, forests,
 and even a bit of the Ozark mountains.

to me, it's really interesting to see the terrain wrestling between Midwest and Southeast.
we'll be driving across the big, dry plains,
and then suddenly drop down into a watershed
 with trees and hollows and a big muddy river.
the changes fascinate me.

i've encountered quick summer storms,
early fall downpours
and perfectly sunny days.

Your love of travel is evident in many of your posts, dear Abigail. On your recent trips you saw terrain similar to that which I saw during parts of my journey west. On the leg from Flagstaff through Sedona there were sheer rock cliffs rising from the highway only a few feet from the car. A passenger could reach out and touch the rocks as the car passed by and, of course, there were "falling rock zone" signs for miles on end. I saw fields filled with those huge wind turbines you have shown on your blog, stretches of fertile farm land, barren deserts, majestic mountains and deep canyons. There is beauty everywhere for those who bother to look and you are certainly one of those people.

This land is your land This land is my land
From California to the New York island;
From the red wood forest to the Gulf Stream waters
This land was made for you and Me.

As I was walking that ribbon of highway,
I saw above me that endless skyway:
I saw below me that golden valley:
This land was made for you and me.

I've roamed and rambled and I followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts;
And all around me a voice was sounding:
This land was made for you and me.

When the sun came shining, and I was strolling,
And the wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling,
As the fog was lifting a voice was chanting:
This land was made for you and me.

Really loving the shots of the rain clouds, and also that third shot from the top. You've turned something that I imagine would be mundane to most and have turned it into something beautiful. Well done! I always look forward to what photos you'll share on your next post.

The changing landscape really is something! I remember traveling to Arkansas and watching the mountains slowly fade away and the flat planes taking over. I would so love to travel further west some day! I LOVE the photos of the rain coming down, I see that here occasionally but there are so many trees and hills around that I never have a good view of it.

Arkansas is one of my favorite places to travel. You've got the beauty of the delta rice fields and then the climb into the mountains and some truly beautiful rivers and caverns. glad you had a great time!

Your description of the various elements that conspire to make up that beautiful landscape remind me of parts of the Canadian province of Alberta (with one foot in the Rockies, the other in the prairies) - a place that is well worth visiting, camera in tow, if you ever get the chance.

Big hugs, joyful Friday wishes & a huge thank you for your touchingly sweet comment on my reader survey post this week, sweet dear.
