adventure of a lifetime.

what do you think it was
that ran off into the night?
the leftover memories of yesterday
like paper thin, delicate wildflower petals
tucked away
forgotten in some antique volume?
with each new discovery
and each new day:
let us not forget the winds of yesterday
that press so insistently at our backs.

and maybe i like it where He has put me
here
now.
and there's not much reason
to worry for tomorrow.

enjoying the adventure of today
like i'm alive again.

Sweeter Gets the Journey

one year of the sunset project

 from February 1, 2014 - January 31, 2015
i took a picture of the sunset every night
and posted them weekly here and on Flickr.
documenting the evening skies was great fun and a great challenge.
it became a habit
a nightly journal.
i will still look at a photograph
and remember the day and events i stepped away from.

i've been asked if i'm going to continue to photograph sunsets.
the answer, of course, is yes.
i'm sky and sunset crazy, and have been all my life.
don't worry, i'll still post sunsets now that the project is over.

here are a few of my personal favorites
and a short film compilation of the images.
thank you for your interest in this project
your kind words on the weekly posts have been so encouraging.

A journal of the evening skies, February 1, 2014 - Jan 31, 2015.
Documenting the sunsets and texture of clouds many people miss was so rewarding. For one year, i paused conversations, stepped out of buildings or took a walk to take a picture of the western sky. I stood in open fields, roadsides, parking lots and my backyard. Sometimes it was cold or hot, cloudy or raining. Sometimes i got up from dinner or stepped out of work.
It was always rewarding, stepping away from life into the fresh air and open Kansas sky. I've learned to appreciate more the little blessings of life, and to slow down.
I'd like to thank various members of my family for coming along as company on many evening walks, bike rides and drives (and making sure we were out of walmart and back on the interstate to get a better picture) once in a while :).

Filming, editing and music by myself.

You make the dawn and the sunset shout for joy."

conflicting dreams

a good morning:
waking up in a new place
looking out the window
and seeing horses.
so i got my coat and made new friends.

i love adventure, travel, new places.
but my heart lurches
breaks a little
and i forget about everything
except the soft hide
intense eyes
broad forehead.
warm breath on my gloved hand
plod of hooves following me
nudge of a velvet whiskered nose.

you see folks
the road gets in your blood
your mind
the air you breathe.

but when the air i breathe
smells of horses
earth and cattle
when my mind is overtaken by 1000 lb. animals,
with farming and ranching  in my blood,
the open road's clutches on the forefront of my brain
aren't as strong for a moment.

P.S. a very short film for the kind folks who own the ranch and the heart-breakers (beautiful horses)

OH OCTOBER! (short film + october miscellaneous)

the month of october was a great one.
i always feel very creative in fall.
i had lots of adventures
made new animal friends
got a new addition to my film camera family
reveled in the beauty of the fiery month.
here are a few misc. photos i wanted to share.

since i was feeling especially creative
i took a few seconds of film footage of neat things,
things that couldn't be properly captured in a single frame.
the Great Plains, Flint Hills, Kansas City,
Missouri River, Ozark Mountains, Kansas countryside.
also featuring everyday life.
