NEW
before i cut my hair;
i set pin-curls one last time,
and used kool-aid to dye a strand of it green
(tucked quietly away against the back of my neck).
it was my birthday,
i wore a dress and new shoes out in the cold, cold wind.
we drive the frozen dirt road
to a bridge over the interstate,
get out and try to make pictures of the road and the cars,
try not to slip on the ice,
try to not blow away in the wind.

my hair is shorter now
(the soft green now long faded).
the sun shines gold, the wind doesn't blow as cold.
time runs together and rosy days stand out.
music is played and new songs are learned
but the old ones aren't forgotten.
there is so much new
in this new year.
and this girl ran to the new year with open arms,
abandoning the skidding brakes/bittersweet nostalgia.
and i'm loving it.

(p.s. speaking of 'new' and 'changes', i've been spiffing this place up a bit in my spare time, have a look around!)

it was a good spring
they say that absence makes the heart grow fonder.
that older age casts a rosy light on previous days.
that yesterday seems sweeter the more we get into tomorrow.
once we learn bigger lessons, maybe,
we forget the pain of learning the smaller ones,
ones we didn’t realize were small at the time.
i got back more film,
freshly developed from the days of budding bushes.
it was a good spring.
is it too late to say that...now that autumn is here?
now that the bushes' leaves drift into red, one by one?
absence makes the heart grow fonder maybe,
or perhaps less cold.
when the old letters are thrown away and the pretty pictures kept,
the lack of words and abundance of color and light warps memories
(or maybe sheds light on what really matters.)

adventures in film photography / year one
almost exactly a year ago
i stumbled upon a seemingly small blessing
(yet a blessing just the same).
a rummage sale,
a vintage, mismatched, heavy old camera,
three dollars.
i've always been a fan of analog.
the grain,
the texture,
the focus and leaks.
though seeming more elite,
a bit unattainable at the time.
but i found it randomly,
(or rather
it found me.)
countless online articles, little discoveries
and a free light meter app later,
a first roll of film
twenty four manual exposures
excitement, apprehension, confusion.
by that first set of prints, i was hooked.
now there are three wonderful cameras;
each with different meanings,
different strengths and weekends.
ten envelops full of prints in a drawer.
a roll in a purse, waiting to be dropped off
here's to a year of capturing memories on film.
it's been delightful, its been a blessing,
and i can't wait to see where it takes me next.
