child of the wind

fernweh
fern - weh, noun, org. German
A crave for travel, being homesick for a place you've never been

The voices call to me, but i cannot listen

I am leaving

I don't refuse to listen

they are drowned out by a bigger voice.

The voice i have to listen to

Otherwise

I'll bust

"...We are homesick most for the places we have never known."
                                                                    ~Carson McCullers

Happy weekend :D

Hello, dear Abigail! I've learned a new word thanks to this post and its definition is a revelation. So is the McCullers quote at the end. I believe it's true that we all yearn to find that elusive place where we feel completely at home, in our element, with "our people," natural and free to be ourselves. Joni Mitchell's song "Woodstock" seems to speak to the theme of this post. It resonated with me when I was young and still does to this day.

We are stardust
We are golden
And we've got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

I loved seeing these pictures of you and your sister dancing and playing, childlike and free. If you live to be 100, don't ever lose that, Abigail.

What an interesting new word! I often have that feeling a lot, like I just need to travel somewhere far away and explore a new place. Your photos seem to capture the feeling of that word beautifully!

Is that your sister or cousin with you? I love doing photo shoots with my sister, makes things so much more fun when others participate.

Abigail M. said...

Yes, it's my sister. She was on a swing and i yelled through the wind for her to get over here.
She obeyed, asked why, i pointed to the camera and she caught on and started dancing around too. I had the timer set to take multiple photos so the earlier pictures i'm jumping and she's walking up or just standing there.
It was lots of fun. Very spontaneous.
Thanks for all the sweet comments, Sean. :)

I love this, it feels so untethered and free. I also fully enjoy your etymology, what a great word! I share that longing for places I haven't been.

This has described me many times throughout my life for a tee. Though a natural homebody, I also have always had a spirit of wanderlust rooted deep in my soul and have, not terribly infrequently, yearned for places I've never stepped foot, as though I'd known them intimately in the past (the Yukon, for example, where I have strong family ties stretching back to the Klondike gold rush, is one such place).

Why thank you so much! :) And now we have even more in common! These kind of similarities could only mean one thing: I believe we're both homeschooled. :D High-fives to that.

Abigail M. said...

Yes, Hannah, you are right! High fives! :)
just a question, have you heard of the Boyer Family Singers Blog? They are wonderful ladies with a great taste in vintage as well. They are one of my favorites and would be worth checking out (if you already havent)

Hannah Batchelder said...

No, but they certainly sound interesting! I will definitely check it out. :)

Hannah Batchelder said...

Oh my goodness, I just looked them up and they're just like us! The oldest one kind of reminds me of Eva from SHEL. ;) Wow, my pile of favorite blogs is really adding up. :D One of my favorite blogs is Va-voom vintage (which I know that you know; I found you through a comment that showed that we had the same worldview) because of her great tutorials and easy to copy vintage ensembles. :)

Abigail M. said...

I've thought that she reminds me of Eva as well! My pile of blogs is really huge, too. i just keep finding more and more!!! So neat that you found me there and we share the same world view, isn't it great to meet other young ladies with the same interests and views? i think its AMAZING! Do you have a blog of your own? If you do, let me know, i'd like to follow. If you don't, i'd encourage you to think about starting one if you're interested. I think you'd be a great contributor to the blogging world. :)

Hannah Batchelder said...

Aww, thank you! I would have to get more vintage things before I start up one though. I'm not sure, it's a thought. We definitely have to find a better way to get to know each other than conversing in the comments section, because I have a feeling that we have so much to say that this thread would be never ending. :D I LOVE getting to know people with the same world-view. I saw the answers in Genesis website linked to your page and was like, "YES!!" Do you get the magazine too? Meanwhile, still lovin' your blog! ;)

Abigail said...

ok, i understand.
hehe, i agree, this thread is getting quite long. i suppose we could email?
isn't it so neat to find others with the same interests? it helps me not feel so weird. like, i know when people see me wearing old dresses or setting my hair or listening to old music and such, they're like, 'oh yeah, that's cool,' but online and through blogging i've found so many awesome people and have discovered more awesome music and outfits and it helps me not feel so strange. (we do get the mag, by the way).
thanks so much for all the encouragement, Hannah. you're awesome!

Hannah Batchelder said...

Haha! Ikr? I was talking to someone joking that my sister said I looked like a grandma (she was just being silly) and this person said "you don't look like a grandma, just like what a grandma might have looked like at your age" which, of course for people like us, was a big compliment. :) Yes, I had no idea that there were so many people who loved vintage like I do. In fact, I didn't know that "going vintage" was a thing. Vintage is such a great way to be unusual and original without looking strange or ridiculous. If anything, much better than the clothes you wear today (think short shorts and bikinis, plain t-shirts and purposefully yucky-looking jeans). Still trying to find good vintage outfits for dirty work though! I like to garden but hate doing it in a button up blouse which was the only thing they had back then. :P But another good thing about vintage is that it has already been in fashion, out of fashion, and come back as classy. You won't look at old pictures of yourself 20 years from now and say "What was I thinking with that outfit!" :P
P.S. AIG mag is the best! ;) Thanks for all of the lovely replies! I'm truly flattered. :)
